I recently retired after eleven years as President of Crime Stoppers of Michigan. During that time I got to know Mr. Adams and the organization Chance For Life. I ran a large ($80M) construction company for 32 years. I would have hired Chance For Life people for responsible positions within my companies.

They are extremely respectful, good problem solvers, insightful into other people, and most important, responsible for protecting the lives of others within the prisons. They take advantage of opportunities to increase their employability. They have mediation and dispute resolution skills. They take responsibility for their past mistakes without excuses. They are anxious to be involved in their communities and help others to not make the same mistakes.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to you both for your tireless efforts in bringing the Chance For Life program into the Michigan Department of Corrections facilities. The endless hours of training and teaching you provide have not gone unnoticed. These efforts have resulted in a safer population within the facilities that are under my jurisdiction. Facilities with this program are significantly more peaceful and misconducts have been greatly reduced to the extent that the CFL units within the facility have little to no misconducts.

Additionally, the entire population as a prison that has the CFL Program is more peaceful as a result of the influence of CFL and the active participants. The success observed in these facilities has been so impressive that Wardens continue to request additional CFL programs within their facilities. This is a strong testament to the benefits of the program which extends beyond incarceration as it also prepares individuals for the time when they will be released and reintroduced to the community providing a greater opportunity for success.

Life is like a boxing match. One loses not when one falls down but when one fails to get back up. CFL is playing an important role of helping people get back up. Each person that is rehabilitated becomes an inspiration and a role model for many more.

What I really liked was the unique approach of transforming minds by teaching inmates how to "think", a basic skill that many of us take for granted. By teaching about responsibility, planning ahead before taking action, the importance of community, conflict resolution, and other social skills, it sets prisoners up to be success when exiting the system.

On behalf of Greater Detroit Area Health Council, I fully support the Chance For Life Organization's goal (CFL)... The CFL long-term program teaches Mediation/Conflict Resolution, Critical Thinking/Communication, Substance Abuse Awareness, Diversity, Parenting, and Family Reunification. As a result, the nine correctional facilities that have engaged the CFL curriculum have enjoyed a significant reduction in violent incidents among inmates.

CFL programming has assisted countless consumers in reducing their substance use and in transforming their lives in positive manners such as obtaining employment, completing high school diploma equivalency or returning back to school, and maintaining mental health treatment services. As the Director of Prevention Services here ar Mariners Inn and the Chairperson of Detroit Wayne Mentals Health Authority SUD Oversight Board, CFL is greatly recommended to offset any institution and their established programming and or services.
